Pixel

  • The term that comes from the words Picture Element (PEL).
  • A pixel (px) is the smallest portion of an image or display that a computer is capable of printing or displaying.
  • Graphics monitors display pictures by dividing the display screen into thousands (or millions) of pixels, arranged in rows and columns.
  • The pixels are so close together that they appear connected.

  • The quality of a display system largely depends on its resolution, how many pixels it can display, and how many bits are used to represent each pixel.
  • The resolution of a pixel is depends on the number of pixels used per inch.

Pixels Usage in Computer  Monitors :

  • Computers can use pixels to display an image, often an abstract image that represents a GUI
  • The resolution of this image is called the display resolution and is determined by the video card of the computer.
  • LCD monitors also use pixels to display an image, and have a native resolution. Each pixel is made up of triads, with the number of these triads determining the native resolution.

Pixel Usage in Telescopes :

  • The pixel scale used in astronomy is the angular distance between two objects on the sky that fall one pixel apart on the detector.
