CODEC'S for Videos

  • A video codec is the computer algorithm or device which is used to compress and decompress the media files(Audio and Video files).
  • for example, if you cop the file from CD to your system by default it will use Windows Media Audio(WMA) format to compress the video and then when player plays the video it uses the WMA codec for decompress the video.

Types of Video CODEC'S :

  MPEG : 

  • One of the biggest video codec in video codecs family.
  • The most commonly used format.
     MPEG-1 :
  • It is widely used in production of VCD file.
  • It can compress the 120 minute film to 1.2 GB.
  • It can store the video files into .VCD or .MPG format.
     MPEG-2 :
  • It is used in production of DVD file.
  • It mainly used in HDTV and high demand for editing and processing of application.
  • It can convert the 120 minute video file to 4GB or 8GB.
  • MPEG-2 codec provide the high quality compared to the MPEG-1.
     MPEG-4:
  • This is new compression technology.
  • It can generate the 120minute file to 300MB.


DivX / XviD:

  • DivX is a commercially sold codec, while XviD is an open source utility meant to function as an alternative to its commercial cousin. 
  • Both codecs can decode the other format codec's.

Advantages of Video CODEC'S :

  • Compressed video is faster to download .
  • Easy to transfer the video across the Internet.
